Williamstown High School participates in the Advance Program, a government funded initiative which aims to develop students’ skills in teamwork, leadership, personal recreation and community involvement.  

The Advance Program (formerly called Cadets) is offered as an elective to students in Years Nine and Ten.  

 

Year Nine Advance 

This subject runs for 2 periods per week over a whole year.

Teacher: Arthur Bersee

Activities offered include: 

  • Practical sailing lessons - in ‘Extreme’ dinghies and ‘Pacers’ at Royal Yacht Club of Victoria
  • Sailing Camp - 3 days at Geelong Sailing School in Term One
  • Sailing theory and water safety
  • Rock climbing lessons - at Cliffhanger, Altona)
  • Orienteering
  • Basic First Aid
  • Fitness activities: cycling, swimming, power walking
  • Camp craft – practice for expeditions: tents, meal planning and camp cooking
  • Phillip Island – overnight camp at Cowes, hiking Cape Woolamai and  surfing Smith’s Beach in Term Four
  • Sorrento Back Beach –3days / 2nights camping. Ocean kayaking to Portsea and environmental studies in Term Four

Year Ten Advance 

This subject runs for 4.5 periods per week for the whole year.

Teacher: Sonia Aldons 

Students are encouraged to undertake the internationally recognised Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award through participation in school based activities (practical and theory), a camp, plus personal recreation and community service outside of school. Course work/activities include: 

  • Swimming and water safety
  • Practical sailing lessons - in ‘Extreme’ dinghies and ‘Pacers’ at Royal Yacht Club of Victoria
  • Boat handling and marine craft
  • Navigation
  • Marine radio
  • Weather
  • Menu planning and meal preparation
  • Gippsland Lakes Sailing Camp – 5 days living aboard and sailing Dufor and Catalina cruising yachts in Term Two
  • Yarra River/Port of Melbourne cruise
  • Senior First Aid Certificate course
  • Fire Safety and Extinguisher Training with the MFB
  • Water Police/Search and Rescue excursion
  • Class community service/environmental projects
  • Maritime history of Williamstown
  • Investigation of relevant career pathways
