The program began in 1999 with a Year 7 intake and extended to Years 8, 9 and 10 in the following years. The program builds on the highly successful acceleration program that has been available at VCE level for some years now. What does acceleration mean? The accelerated program provides an opportunity for students to progress more quickly through secondary school and to undertake challenging learning experiences which are tailored to meet the needs of students capable of outstanding academic achievement. There is a greater emphasis on higher order thinking and learning skills and independent learning and research. Course content is compacted so that a normal Year 7-10 program is covered in a 3 year period via a comprehensive and specific SEALP curriculum. Enrichment is provided by broadening content, understanding, experience and skills to a level appropriate to the students' stage of development. Extension leads to an in depth study and the integration and application of knowledge at a higher level. How will it work? Students whose families wish them to enter the accelerated learning program will be required to participate in a selection process. Those students who are accepted into the program will be grouped together in one home group when entering Year 7 and will remain with that home group until the end of Year 10 (provided they continue to meet the academic requirements of the program). What will the curriculum be? Students in the Accelerated Learning Program will take the same subjects as all other students in their year level. The difference will be in the complexity of the work and the rate at which it is completed. The Year 7 Accelerated Learning Program group will take the following subjects as a home group: English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Integrated Studies, Art, Music, Drama, Home Group. The Accelerated Learning Program group will take the following subjects in mixed classes with other Year 7 students; French, Indonesian or Japanese (select one), Physical Education, Sport Education and Challenge Units from a range of subject areas; Food Technology, Electronics, Wood, Horticulture, Drama and Music are all experienced over a 2 year period. This allows for the development of social relationships with a broader range of peers. What is the selection process? The selection process is in four parts. 1. Prospective students are required to complete an application form. A fee of $85.00 is required with the applciation. 2. When a student applies to enter the program they are given referral forms to be completed by their Grade 6 teacher and their parent/guardian. 3. Students whose teacher and parents/guardians reports and test results indicate that they have the potential range of skills for the program will be invited with their parents for an interview during July/August. There are 25 co-educational places in this program for 2010. The application fee is non-refundable. If the child is ill on the test day please contact the school as soon as possible. If a medical certificate can be supplied alternative arrangements may be available. Final decisions will take into account all the information available. Parents/Guardians will be advised of the outcomes by the end of July. How do i find out more? To register interest in your student sitting the test contact the office at Bayview St on 9399 9228.
