Languages other than English
At Williamstown High School we offer the students a choice of three different languages: French, Indonesian or Japanese. Students enrolling at Williamstown High School choose one of these languages, which they will study from Year 7 onwards. French Why study French? French is one of the most widely used languages in the world. It is the official language of the United Nations and of more than 50 international organisations such as the Red Cross and the International Olympics Committee.French is an appealing language and has close ties to English. More than 20,000 English words have their origin in French and many English words have found their way into the French language.Seventy million tourists are attracted to France each year to experience the lifestyle, art, food, wine, fashion, sporting events, architecture and natural beauty.
An overview of French at Williamstown High School
Through years 7-10 the focus of French study is on four main outcomes: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students complete a variety of language and cultural tasks which enable them to communicate effectively in French.At year 7 the topics studied include greetings, numbers, colours, animals, classroom objects and language, time and dates, family and occupations and how to express opinions. Classroom activities include games and music, quizzes and excursions. Students also learn about the culture, geography and music of France and other French-speaking countries around the world.In year 8, the topics studied include festivals, clothing, film and television, food and drink and pastimes.In year 9, the topics studied include family, personalities, music, going on exchange, food and drink, at home, jobs and eating out at a restaurant among others.In year 10, the topics studied include personal details, life at home, daily routine, health and fitness, going out, travel and transport, holidays, media and shopping. At VCE we follow the course set by VCAA. The course is designed to build on what students already know. Students are expected to improve their language skills whilst learning more about the country. Indonesian Why study Indonesian? Bahasa Indonesia is the national language of the Republic of Indonesia, Australia’s closest neighbour. It is very closely related to Bahasa Malaysia, the national language of Malaysia. These two languages are spoken by more than 210 million people in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Southern Thailand. Australia is becoming increasingly involved – culturally, politically and economically – in the South-East Asian region. Indonesian language skills can open doors to a wide range of employment opportunities in the areas of government administration, education, business, tourism, travel, translating and interpreting, the military, medicine, law, engineering and journalism. Despite recent events, Indonesia is also a popular, affordable and fascinating area in which to travel. Students also learn about Indonesia and its culture, studying Indonesian geography, traditional music, puppetry and travel.In year 8 the topics studied include clothing and parts of the body, shopping, days and dates and daily school life.In year 9 the topics studied include describing your daily routine, eating at a restaurant, sport, weather and clothing.In year 10 the topics studied include shopping at a market, describing your weekend, following and giving directions and discussing holiday plans.At VCE we follow the course set by VCAA. Japanese
Why study Japanese? Japan is one of the most important nations on the world scene and a leading player in the Asia-Pacific region. An understanding of the Japanese people, their language and their culture is the foundation for future partnerships in fields as varied as information technology, law, economics, architecture and history.The relationship between Australia and Asian countries has been growing rapidly, particularly in the last decade. Among the Asian countries, Japan plays an important role in the world, especially in terms of world economy.
An overview of Japanese at Williamstown High School Through years 7-10 the focus of Japanese study is on four main outcomes: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students complete a variety of language and cultural tasks which enable them to communicate effectively in Japanese.In year 7 students learn Hiragana characters and study language based on the topics of greetings, numbers, classroom objects, family members and animals.In year 8 students learn Katakana characters and study language based on the topics of locations, transport, school subject and time and dates.In year 9 students learn Kanji characters and study language based on the topics of weather, shopping, family and seasons.From year 10 onwards students start learning topics consolidating their skills and studying the topics set for VCE by VCAA. Students are expected to improve their language skills whilst learning more about the country. For Japanese there are nine themes that are studied:
