The Accelerated Sports Program 

 

 

The accelerated Sports program has been designed to provide a fantastic opportunity to young athletes who have already shown excellence in their sports.

 

This elite program allows the students to build on their already established skills whilst challenging themselves to reach their full potential.

 

This specialised program runs in conjunction with the student’s education which allows them to achieve academically whilst remaining committed to their sport. There are also extra activities such as guest speakers and fitness classes.

The program offers elite coaching in netball, basketball, athletics and swimming. Current coaches include:
  • Marg Lind – Netball Coach (Former Melbourne Kestrels head coach, current Hume City Falcons coach, Head coach Central West Zone Academy and Marg has also coached several WHS teams to State final victories)
  • Adrian Mott – Sprint Coach (2006 Stawell Gift winner and sprints coach for Richmond Football Club and Cricket Victoria)
  • Peter Burke – Distance Coach (Has been a coach since 1972, Level 4 athletics coach, Currently coaching Allan Cook – 800m runner ranked 10 in the world, Amy Cashin – Pacific Schools Games Gold medallist in the steeple chase…..and many more!)
  • Brad Carter – Jumps Coach (2008 Australian sprints and jumps coach for the World Junior Team as well as being a level 4 jumps and sprints coach)
  • Wendy Munro – Basketball Coach (Played in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) for St Kilda and coached several of our school teams to victory in the State Titles)
  • Lloyd Klaman – Basketball Coach – Four years coaching Canberra Cannons in National Basketball League. Four years coaching Men's and Women's teams in the West Australian State League, West Australian U20 women's coach at the Australian National Championships, Currently coaching Altona Gators in the Big V Mens Youth League and Altona Gators U14 girls in VJBL.
  • Mat Tippett - Swimming Coach - Has been coaching swimming for 15 years and is an ex Australian Swimming Squad member, recognised as the fastest swimmer in Ironman Triathlon in Australia, finished 4th in the Freemantle to Rottnest 22km open water swim 2009, Age Group swim record holder, Ironman Western Australia. 

 

Competitions include:

 

Netball – Waverley International Championships and Netball Victoria Schools Championships

 

Basketball – College Championships

 

Athletics – Schools Knockout competition, Victorian All Schools athletics and cross country

 

Swimming – All Schools Relays Training sessions are timetabled during school hours with every care taken not to disrupt other classes.

 

Coaching in the above sports takes place once a week with students being entered in various carnivals and tournaments throughout the year.

Netball and Basketball – Altona Stadium on Queens Street, Altona

 

Swimming – Bayfit Leisure Centre on corner of Mason Street and Millers Road, Altona North

 

Athletics – Newport Athletics Track, The Strand, Newport 

 

 

Selection for current students of Williamstown High School

 

Students who are involved in one of the above sports, demonstrating talent and ability, are invited to complete an application form, which is followed by a trial process. In addition to this, students must also demonstrate commitment to school studies and have an exemplary record of school conduct and attendance. Trials are undertaken at the start of each semester with a pre-selection trial day held for prospective Year 7s in the middle of the year. 

 

Past Success 

  • Current year 10 girls have won the State Netball Titles 3 years in a row
  • Current Year 8 Basketball and Netball girls are the reigning state champions
  • Brodie Roberts was a member of the U17 Victorian Netball team.
  • Morgan Mitchell came 2nd in the 800m Australian Cup Nationals amongst many more achievements.
  • Rachel Jarry is currently representing Australia in Basketball at an U19 level and is a member of the WNBL AIS team.
  • Vanessa Augustini and Olivia Mitchell made the Australasian U15 Girls Netball team.
  • Vanessa Augustini also made the Victorian U16 Basketball team.
