The Sport Program at Williamstown High School has been extremely successful over a number of years. The school is ranked in section A in both Swimming and Athletics within the Western Zone District, as a result the school has placed in the top 3 for all Victorian Government Secondary Schools in both Athletics and Swimming at recent championships and is now one the leaders for sport in the State. Our school produced over 10 State Team Finalists in 2008 in a range of sports and over 30 individual State Finalists in a range of individual sports. Two of the main reasons for such success in the sporting area are the Sport Education Program at Williamstown High School as well as the time and effort placed into the Inter-School Sport Program at the school.
Sport Education Sport Education is a program where students select a sport they wish to play and learn more about. Students from years 7-9 participate in the sport they choose for two periods once a week. Student’s complete one full term of the sport, then an inter-school team is selected from the class for the sport. The students learn and are taught skills such as; fair play, co-operation, team work, rules to the game, game sense and important physical skills of the game. The students are exposed to 4 different sporting options over the year. Our aim is to incorporate the local community where possible and encourage all students to join a club that may have interest to them. We strive for maximum participation. Inter-School Sport Students are selected and try out for a particular sport and compete against schools from the district in Inter-School Sport. This process is complete fairly and thoroughly. We aim for maximum participation and try to give students an opportunity to represent Williamstown high school. It is common to enter multiple teams in the same event to encourage students to participate and ‘have a go’. If teams or individuals are successful at district level they progress through to the Western Zone Finals, then culminating in State Finals. Williamstown High School can boast that more students than from any other school in the district are able to participate in Inter-School Sport. In 2008 we entered over 100 sporting teams at the district. The school is also the most successful in the district winning almost 50% of the sports they enter.
